When I was asked to do a blog for a class I tried to think of what I was passionate about or had a lot of information to talk about. I started off by thinking what has made an impact on my life, and then I thought of a girl by the name of Emily Claire (I decided to change the name of the person for privacy reasons).
Emily was a girl who I had went to high school with and had also dated my older brother about four years ago.
Her life was suddenly taken from her because of a drunk driver in which she was the back seat passenger in. I was of course upset about the loss of a friend but I was upset and frustrated from HOW and WHY it happened. Emily was just 19 years old when she was killed. Word spread around town quickly of her passing and it truly affected all of the students in my high school. But you know what I saw didn’t have an effect on anyone; kids in school still continued to drink and drive! I was astonished to see even her close friend’s binge drink and then go to get in their cars. They continued to joke around about drinking and driving; posting pictures of them with a beer in hand while driving. One of Emily’s best friends actually dates the guy that was the driver of the car that killed her!
I don’t understand! How can a person continue to do something after they have seen it take away their friends life? After Emily’s death it made me realize how many young people in society today drink and drive, constantly. They all have the mindset that nothing bad will ever happen to them. From seeing all of this over the past few years I knew that I would love to talk about it, or in this case, blog about it. I want to know that there are young people out there like myself who share the same thoughts on this subject.
